Thursday will be a big day for Blake Shelton super fan Linda Lake, but it will be a bittersweet one as well.
For a decade the 60-year-old and her older sister Dorothy Huebner have followed the country singer’s career, and often followed the singer himself.
The roommates have seen Shelton perform 33 times and met him 18 times.
They’ve traveled as far as Amarillo, Texas to see him play a WalMart, visited his hometown of Ada, Okla., and Tishomingo, Okla., where the star lives with his singing wife, Miranda Lambert.
Once in 2009, the sisters traveled more than 1,500 miles to see him play four concerts in five days.
The appeal all comes from the music.
“A lot of people can sing, but Blake has a voice. It’s just so amazing that four years later, he’s on ‘The Voice,” Linda says.
The fandom has been noted by Linda’s sons, who call the country star their “other brother.”
“My sister and I, there’s not a day we don’t talk about Blake,” Linda says. “He’s been part of our lives since 2001. We’ve laughed, cried, screamed, lost control watching awards shows.”
She shows off a photo book of the two fans flanking their idol over the years, often wearing matching Shelton T-shirts and sometimes “BS” tattoos on their cheeks.
But this Thursday they’ll be separated when Linda will be taking her 15-year-old granddaughter Hailey to meet the singer. Dorothy didn’t get a pass to the WE Fest meet-and-greet and Linda thought it was time for her granddaughter to meet the star.
“She says, ‘My grandma loves Blake Shelton more because there’s more pictures of him than anyone else (in the family),’ ” Linda says with a laugh.
The living room of the north Fargo apartment she shares with Dorothy is lined with pictures of the country singer and his band and even images of Shelton’s mom and uncle.
The sisters send Shelton Christmas and birthday cards, but didn’t send one to his May wedding, though they did post congratulations on the star’s message board for fans, or BS’ers.
“We wanted to go to the wedding so bad, but we couldn’t find a way to sneak in,” Linda says with a laugh.
And the two fans approve of Shelton’s bride.
“Miranda’s just got a spirit about her and there is a lot of spirit in their music,” Linda says. “She’s an amazing writer … . They have amazing chemistry … . They’re a beautiful couple and you can just tell they have a lot of respect for each other.”
